Question 118 of 130

Three blocks A,BA,B and CC are lying on a smooth horizontal surface, as shown in the figure. AA and BB have equal masses, mm while CC has mass M.M. Block AA is given an initial speed vv towards BB due to which it collides with BB perfectly inelastically. The combined mass collides with C,C, also perfectly inelastically . 56th\dfrac{5}{6}\text{t}\text{h} of the initial kinetic energy is lost in the whole process. What is the value of M/mM/m?

Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) 44

mv=(m+m)v′mv=\left(m+m\right){v}^{'}

(m+m)v′=(m+m+M)vf\left(m+m\right){v}^{'}=\left(m+m+M\right){v}_{f}

∴∴ final velocity vf=m2m+Mv{v}_{f}=\dfrac{m}{2m+M}v

Initial energy
=12mv2=\dfrac{1}{2}m{v}^{2}

Final energy
=12(2m+M)(mv2m+M)2=\dfrac{1}{2}\left(2m+M\right){\left(\dfrac{mv}{2m+M}\right)}^{2}

Given that
5612mv2=12mv2−12(2m+M)(mv2m+M)2\dfrac{5}{6}\dfrac{1}{2}m{v}^{2}=\dfrac{1}{2}m{v}^{2}-\dfrac{1}{2}\left(2m+M\right){\left(\dfrac{mv}{2m+M}\right)}^{2}

112mv2=12m2v2(2m+M)\dfrac{1}{12}m{v}^{2}=\dfrac{1}{2}\dfrac{{m}^{2}{v}^{2}}{\left(2m+M\right)}

6m=2m+M6m=2m+M

Mm=4\dfrac{M}{m}=4
