Question 59 of 380

The resistance of a wire is 5Ω5\Omega. Its new resistance in ohm, if stretched to 55 times of its original length will be :

Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) 125125

The resistance of a wire
(R)(R) is related to its resistivity (ρ)\left(\rho \right), length(l)(l) and cross-sectional area (A)\left(A\right) as:
R=ρlAR=\rho \dfrac{l}{A}

As the length of wire increases, the cross-sectional area decreases. The cross-sectional area in terms of volume
(V)(V) and length (l)(l) is
A=VlA=\dfrac{V}{l}
∴R=ρl2V∴R=\rho \dfrac{{l}^{2}}{V}
Taking the volume of wire constant,

R∝l2R\propto {l}^{2}
So if
R′{R}^{'} is the resistance of wire after getting redrawn and RR is the initial resistance of wire,
∴R′R=(5l)2l2=25⇒R′=25×R=125Ω∴\dfrac{{R}^{'}}{R}=\dfrac{(5l{)}^{2}}{{l}^{2}}=25 \Rightarrow {R}^{'}=25\times R=125\Omega
