Question 63 of 380

A 1m1m long wire is broken into two unequal parts XX and YY. The XX part of the wire is stretched into another wire WW. Length of WW is twice the length of XX and the resistance of WW is twice that of YY. Find the ratio of length of XX andYY.

Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) 1:21:2

Resistance of a wire is given by
R=ρLAR=\dfrac{\rho L}{A}, where, ρ\rho is conductivity, LL is length of wire and AA is cross-sectional area of wire.
For a single wire,
AA and ρ\rho are constant.
Thus, for parts
XX and YY, resistance, RXRY=lXlY\dfrac{{R}_{X}}{{R}_{Y}}=\dfrac{{l}_{X}}{{l}_{Y}}.
When wire is stretched to double of its length, then resistance becomes four times, thus,
RW=4RX=2RY{R}_{W}=4{R}_{X}=2{R}_{Y}.
Hence, the ratio is
RXRY=12\dfrac{{R}_{X}}{{R}_{Y}}=\dfrac{1}{2}.
So,
lXlY=12\dfrac{{l}_{X}}{{l}_{Y}}=\dfrac{1}{2}
