Question 121 of 380

A cell of emf 90V90V is connected across series combination of two resistors each of 100Ω100\Omega resistance. A voltmeter of resistance 400Ω400\Omega is used to measure the potential difference across each resistor. The reading of the voltmeter will be:

Show answer and solution

Answer: (A) 40V40V

As we know, voltmeter is connected in parallel to the element being measured.

The equivalent resistance of the above circuit is
Req=(400×100400+100)+100=80+100=180Ω{R}_{eq}=\left(\dfrac{400\times 100}{400+100}\right)+100=80+100=180\Omega
Current through the circuit is
i=90180=12Ai=\dfrac{90}{180}=\dfrac{1}{2}A
Reading of the voltmeter is
VR=i(400×100400+100)=12×80=40V{V}_{R}=i\left(\dfrac{400\times 100}{400+100}\right)=\dfrac{1}{2}\times 80=40V
