Question 152 of 380

Determine the charge on the capacitor in the following circuit:

Show answer and solution

Answer: (D) 200μC200\mu C

After a long time capacitor branch will behave like open circuit so circuit will be like,

Equivalent resistance is

R=6+(4∣∣(2+10))Ω=9ΩR=6+\left(4||\left(2+10\right)\right)\Omega =9\Omega
and, the current through battery becomes
729=8A\dfrac{72}{9}=8A
From the circuit shown, current through
10Ω10\Omega resistor becomes, 4(10+2+4)×8=2A\dfrac{4}{(10+2+4)}\times 8=2A
Potential available for capacitor is = potential drop across
10Ω10\Omega
∴∴ Potential available for capacitor is: 10×2=20V10\times 2=20V
∴∴ Charge on capacitor Q=(10μF)(20V)=200μCQ=\left(10\mu F\right)\left(20V\right)=200\mu C
