Question 233 of 380

In the following circuit, the battery has an emf of 2V2V and an internal resistance of 23Ω\dfrac{2}{3}\Omega. The power consumption in the entire circuit is ______ WW.

Show answer and solution

Answer: 3

As we can see, two resistances of
2Ω2\Omega in the middle portion(in both left and right side) are in parallel, so their combined resistance will be 2×22+2+2×22+2=2Ω\dfrac{2\times 2}{2+2}+\dfrac{2\times 2}{2+2}=2\Omega. Now this resistance along with the topmost & bottommost resistance are in parallel again, so total resistance of the circuit will be,
Req=23+23=43Ω{R}_{eq}=\dfrac{2}{3}+\dfrac{2}{3}=\dfrac{4}{3}\Omega
∴P=V2Req=443=3W∴P=\dfrac{{V}^{2}}{{R}_{eq}}=\dfrac{4}{\dfrac{4}{3}}=3W
