Question 367 of 380

To know the resistance GG of a galvanometer by half deflection method, a battery of emf VE{V}_{E} and resistance RR is used to deflect the galvanometer by angle θ\theta . If a shunt of resistance SS is needed to get half deflection the GG, RR and SS are related by the equation:

Show answer and solution

Answer: (A) S(R+G)=RGS\left(R+G\right)=RG

Let resistance SS is connected with galvanometer of resistance GG, than
IG=VR+G{I}_{G}=\dfrac{V}{R+G}

Now, as shown below figure a shunt
SS is connected in parallel with the galvanometer for half deflection in it, that is IG′=IG2{I}_{G}'=\dfrac{{I}_{G}}{2}, than
I=VR+GSG+SI=\dfrac{V}{R+\dfrac{GS}{G+S}}

As, shunt and galvanometer are in parallel then
VG=VS{V}_{G}={V}_{S}
IG′G=(I−IG′)S{I}_{G}'G=\left(I-{I}_{G}'\right)S

⇒IG′(G+S)=IS\Rightarrow {I}_{G}'\left(G+S\right)=IS
⇒IG2=ISG+S(∵IG′=IG2)\Rightarrow \dfrac{{I}_{G}}{2}=\dfrac{IS}{G+S}\left(∵{I}_{G}'=\dfrac{{I}_{G}}{2}\right)
On, substituting the values of
IG{I}_{G} and II in above equation

V2(R+G)=VR+GSG+S×SG+S\dfrac{V}{2\left(R+G\right)}=\dfrac{V}{R+\dfrac{GS}{G+S}}\times \dfrac{S}{G+S}
⇒12(R+G)=SR(G+S)+GS\Rightarrow \dfrac{1}{2\left(R+G\right)}=\dfrac{S}{R\left(G+S\right)+GS}
⇒R(G+S)+GS=2S(R+G)\Rightarrow R\left(G+S\right)+GS=2S\left(R+G\right)
⇒RG+RS+GS=2S(R+G)\Rightarrow RG+RS+GS=2S\left(R+G\right)
⇒RG=2S(R+G)−S(R+G)\Rightarrow RG=2S\left(R+G\right)-S\left(R+G\right)
⇒RG=S(R+G)\Rightarrow RG=S\left(R+G\right)
