Question 369 of 380

A 10V10 \text{V} battery with internal resistance 1Ω\text{1} \Omega and a 15V15 \text{V} battery with internal resistance 0.6Ω0.6\Omega are connected in parallel to a voltmeter (see figure). The reading in the voltmeter will be close to:

Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) 13.1V13.1V

The equivalent emf of the battery parallel combination is given as

Equation
=E1r1+E2r21r1+1r2=\dfrac{\dfrac{{E}_{1}}{{r}_{1}}+\dfrac{{E}_{2}}{{r}_{2}}}{\dfrac{1}{{r}_{1}}+\dfrac{1}{{r}_{2}}}

=101+150.611+10.6=10+15061+106=\dfrac{\dfrac{10}{1}+\dfrac{15}{0.6}}{\dfrac{1}{1}+\dfrac{1}{0.6}}=\dfrac{10+\dfrac{150}{6}}{1+\dfrac{10}{6}}

=1058=\dfrac{105}{8}

=13.1V=13.1V

∴∴ The reading measured by voltmeter =13.1V=13.1V
