Question 55 of 70

A potentiometer wire ABAB having length LL and resistance 12r12r is joined to a cell DD of emf ϵ\epsilon and internal resistance rr. A cell CC having EMF ϵ/2\epsilon /2 and internal resistance 3r3r is connected. The length AJAJ, at which the galvanometer, as shown in the figure, shows no deflection is

Show answer and solution

Answer: (D) 1324L\dfrac{13}{24}L

Potential difference across AJ=IRAJAJ=I{R}_{AJ},

=ϵ13r⋅(12rL⋅x)=\dfrac{\epsilon }{13r}\cdot \left(\dfrac{12r}{L}\cdot x\right)

For no current in galvanometer,

ϵ2=\dfrac{\epsilon }{2}= potential difference across AJAJ

ϵ2=12ϵ13Lx\dfrac{\epsilon }{2}=\dfrac{12\epsilon }{13L}x

x=13L24x=\dfrac{13L}{24}
