Question 18 of 223

A person whose mass is 100kg100kg travels from Earth to Mars in a spaceship. Neglect all other objects in sky and take acceleration due to gravity on the
surface of the Earth and Mars as
10ms−210m{s}^{-2} and 4ms−24m{s}^{-2}, respectively. Identify from the below figures, the curve that fits best for the weight of the passenger as a function of time.

Show answer and solution

Answer: (A) (c)(c)

When the passenger moves away from the Earth at some point, gravitational force due to earth will be minimised and then start increasing as the passenger moves towards Mars as g∝1R2g\propto \dfrac{1}{{R}^{2}}also gravitational force cannot be negative. Therefore, the correct curve that fits best for the weight of the passenger as a function of time is (c)\left(c\right).
