Question 41 of 223

An astronaut of mass mm is working on a satellite orbiting the earth at a distance hh from the earth's surface. The radius of the earth is RR, while its mass is MM. The gravitational pull FG{F}_{G} on the astronaut is

Show answer and solution

Answer: (C) FG=GMm(R+h)2{F}_{G}=\dfrac{GMm}{{\left(R+h\right)}^{2}}

As distance of the astronaut from the centre of the Earth is =R+h=R+h
Therefore, gravitational force
=Gm1m2(R+h)2=GMm(R+h)2=\dfrac{G{m}_{1}{m}_{2}}{{\left(R+h\right)}^{2}}=\dfrac{GMm}{{\left(R+h\right)}^{2}}
