Question 69 of 223

Given below are two statements:
Statement I: Acceleration due to earth's gravity decreases as you go 'up' or 'down' from earth's surface.

Statement II: Acceleration due to earth's gravity is same at a height '
hh' and depth 'dd' from earth's surface, if h=dh=d.
In the light of above statements, choose the most appropriate answer form the options given below

Show answer and solution

Answer: (C) Statement I is correct but statement II is incorrect

At any height, g′=g(1−2hR){g}^{'}=g\left(1-\dfrac{2h}{R}\right)[Given: h≪Rh≪R]
and at any depth,

g′=g(1−dR){g}^{'}=g\left(1-\dfrac{d}{R}\right)
Clearly,
g′{g}^{'} decreases in both cases. But if h=dh=d, then value of g′{g}^{'} will not be the same.
Therefore, statement I is correct but statement II is incorrect.
