Question 83 of 223

A body weighs 49N49N on a spring balance at the north pole. What will be its weight recorded on the same weighing machine, if it is shifted to the equator?
[Use
g=GMR2=9.8ms−2g=\dfrac{GM}{{R}^{2}}=9.8m{s}^{-2} and radius of earth, R=6400km.R=6400km.]

Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) 48.83N48.83N

Weight of pole =mg=49N=mg=49N
At equator due to rotation
=ge=g−Rω2={g}_{e}=g-R{\omega }^{2}
so
W=mge=m(g−Rω2)W=m{g}_{e}=m\left(g-R{\omega }^{2}\right)
∴WP>We∴{W}_{P}\gt {W}_{e} Wp=49N{W}_{p}=49N
So,
We=48.83N.{W}_{e}=48.83N. We<49N{W}_{e}\lt 49N
