Question 99 of 223

The change in the value of gg at a height ' hh ' above the surface of the earth is the same as at a depth 'd' below the surface of earth. When both ' dd ' and ' hh ' are much smaller than the radius of earth, then which one of the following is correct?

Show answer and solution

Answer: (C) d=2 h\mathrm{d}=2 \mathrm{~h}

GM(R+h)2=GMR3(R−d)\frac{G M}{(R+h)^2}=\frac{G M}{R^3}(R-d)
⇒d=2h\Rightarrow d=2 h
