Question 181 of 223

Two satellites S1{S}_{1} and S2{S}_{2} are revolving in circular orbits around a planet with radius RI=3200km{R}_{I}=3200km and R2=800km{R}_{2}=800km respectively. The ratio of speed of satellite S1{S}_{1} to the speed of satellite S2{S}_{2} in their respective orbits would be 1x\dfrac{1}{x} where x=x=

Show answer and solution

Answer: 2

Orbital velocity of a satellite in circular motion around a planet,
vo=GMR∝1R{v}_{o}=\sqrt{\dfrac{GM}{R}}\propto \dfrac{1}{\sqrt{R}}
Now,
v1v2=R2R1=8003200=12\dfrac{{v}_{1}}{{v}_{2}}=\sqrt{\dfrac{{R}_{2}}{{R}_{1}}}=\sqrt{\dfrac{800}{3200}}=\dfrac{1}{2}
Hence, the value of
x=2x=2.
