Question 191 of 223

Two satellites, AA and BB, have masses mm and 2m2m respectively. AA is in a circular orbit of radius RR and BB is in a circular orbit of radius 2R2R around the earth. The ratio of their kinetic energies, KAKB\dfrac{{K}_{A}}{{K}_{B}} is:

Show answer and solution

Answer: (C) 11

Let vv be the orbital velocity of the satellite which is given as v=GMrv=\sqrt{\dfrac{GM}{r}}
Here
MM be the mass of the earth, mm be the mass of satellite and rr is the orbit radius.
Kinetic energy,
K=12mv2=12m(GMr)2=GMm2r∝mrK=\dfrac{1}{2}m{v}^{2}=\dfrac{1}{2}m{\left(\sqrt{\dfrac{GM}{r}}\right)}^{2}=\dfrac{GMm}{2r}\propto \dfrac{m}{r}

Ratio,
KAKB=mAmB×rBrA=m2m×2RR=1\dfrac{{K}_{A}}{{K}_{B}}=\dfrac{{m}_{A}}{{m}_{B}}\times \dfrac{{r}_{B}}{{r}_{A}}=\dfrac{m}{2m}\times \dfrac{2R}{R}=1
