Question 221 of 223

The figure shows an elliptical path ABCDABCD of a planet around the sun SS such that the area of triangle CSACSA is 14\dfrac{1}{4} the area of the ellipse. (see figure) with DBDB as the major axis, and CACA as the minor axis. If t1{t}_{1} is the time taken for the planet to go over path ABCABC and t2{t}_{2} for path taken over CDACDA then:

Show answer and solution

Answer: (C) t1=3t2{t}_{1}={3t}_{2}

Using Kepler's law,

Area
ABCDAABCDA=x=x.

Area
SABCS=x4+x2=3x4SABCS=\dfrac{x}{4}+\dfrac{x}{2}=\dfrac{3x}{4}.

Area
SADCS=x2−x4=x4SADCS=\dfrac{x}{2}-\dfrac{x}{4}=\dfrac{x}{4}.
Since Arial velocity remains constant. Therefore, area swept will be proportional to time.

3x4x4=t1t2\dfrac{\dfrac{3x}{4}}{\dfrac{x}{4}}=\dfrac{{t}_{1}}{{t}_{2}}
⇒t1=3t2\Rightarrow {t}_{1}=3{t}_{2}
