Question 226 of 239

In the following nuclear reaction,
D→αD1→β−D2→αD3→γD4D\rightarrow ^{\alpha }{D}_{1}\rightarrow ^{{\beta }^{-}}{D}_{2}\rightarrow ^{\alpha }{D}_{3}\rightarrow ^{\gamma }{D}_{4}
Mass number of
DD is 182182 and atomic number is 7474 . Mass number and atomic number of D4{D}_{4} respectively will be

Show answer and solution

Answer: (A) 174174 and 7171

Equivalent reaction can be written as D→D4+2α+β−+γD\rightarrow {D}_{4}+2\alpha +{\beta }^{-}+\gamma
So, mass number of
D4={D}_{4}=mass number of D−2×4=182−8=174D-2\times 4=182-8=174
Atomic number of
D4={D}_{4}=atomic number of D−2×2+1=74−4+1=71D-2\times 2+1=74-4+1=71
The reaction is

D74182⟶αD172178⟶β−D273178⟶αD371174→γD471174D74182⟶_{\alpha }D172178⟶_{{\beta }^{-}}D273178⟶_{\alpha }D371174\rightarrow _{\gamma }D471174
