Question 130 of 280

A uniform rod ABAB is suspended from a point XX, at a variable distance xx from AA, as shown. To make the rod horizontal, a mass mm is suspended from its end AA. A set of (m,x)(m,x) value is recorded. The appropriate variables that give a straight line, when plotted, are:

Show answer and solution

Answer: (C) m,1xm,\dfrac{1}{x}

Net torque about suspension is zero,

⇒mgx=Mg(l2−x)\Rightarrow mgx=Mg\left(\dfrac{l}{2}-x\right)⇒mx=Ml2−Mx\Rightarrow mx=M\dfrac{l}{2}-Mx
⇒m=(Ml2)1x−M\Rightarrow m=\left(M\dfrac{l}{2}\right)\dfrac{1}{x}-M⇒y=α1x−C\Rightarrow y=\alpha \dfrac{1}{x}-C, where,
y=m,a=Ml2y=m,a=M\dfrac{l}{2} and C=MC=M
it is the equation of straight line with variable
mm and 1x\dfrac{1}{x}.
