Semiconductors

JEE Main level, single correct, medium

Question 8 of 209

The effect of increase in temperature on the number of electrons in conduction band (ne)({n}_{e}) and resistance of a semiconductor will be as:

Show answer and solution

Answer: (C) ne{n}_{e} increases, resistance decreases

In case of semiconductors as the temperature increases the electrons in the valence band get excited and jump into the conduction band and hence the conductance increases resulting in the decrease of resistance. Thus, as temperature increases, ne{n}_{e} increases and resistance decreases.
