Center of Mass, Momentum & Collision

JEE Main level, numerical answer, medium

104 of 130

Question 104 of 130

Two bodies of the same mass are moving with the same speed, but in different directions in a plane. They have a completely inelastic collision and move together thereafter with a final speed which is half of their initial velocities of the two bodies (in degree) is -

Show answer and solution

Answer: 120

Momentum conservation along x direction

2mvcos⁡θ=(2m)v22mv\cos \theta =(2m)\dfrac{v}{2}
cos⁡θ=12\cos \theta =\dfrac{1}{2}
θ=60∘\theta =60^{\circ}
then angle between their initial velocities
=120∘=120^{\circ}
