Question 128 of 130

Statement-1 : Two particles moving in the same direction do not lose all their energy in a completely inelastic collision.
Statement-2 : Principle of conservation of momentum holds true for all kinds of collisions.

Of the four choices given after the statements, choose the one that best describes the two statements.

Of the four choices given after the statements, choose the one that best describes the two statements.

Show answer and solution

Answer: (A) Statement-1 is true, Statement-2 is true; Statement-2 is the correct explanation of Statement-1.

If it is a completely inelastic collision then

m1v1+m2v2=m1v+m2vv=m1v1+m2v2m1+m2 K⋅E=p122 m1+p222 m2\begin{gathered} m_1 v_1+m_2 v_2=m_1 v+m_2 v \\ v=\frac{m_1 v_1+m_2 v_2}{m_1+m_2} \\ \mathrm{~K} \cdot \mathrm{E}=\frac{\mathrm{p}_1^2}{2 \mathrm{~m}_1}+\frac{\mathrm{p}_2^2}{2 \mathrm{~m}_2} \end{gathered}
as
p→1\overrightarrow{\mathrm{p}}_1 and p2→\overrightarrow{\mathrm{p}_2} both simultaneously cannot be zero therefore total KE cannot be lost.
