Question 33 of 311

A certain charge QQ is divided into two parts qq and (Q−q).(Q-q). How should the charges QQ and qq be divided so that qq and (Q−q)(Q-q) placed at a certain distance apart experience maximum electrostatic repulsion?

Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) Q=2qQ=2q

Fq=kq(Q−q)L2=kL2(qQ−q2){F}_{q}=\dfrac{kq(Q-q)}{{L}^{2}}=\dfrac{k}{{L}^{2}}\left(qQ-{q}^{2}\right)
dFdq=0\dfrac{\text{d}F}{\text{d}q}=0 when force is maximum
dFdq=kL2[Q−2q]=0\dfrac{\text{d}F}{\text{d}q}=\dfrac{k}{{L}^{2}}[Q-2q]=0
⇒Q−2q=0⇒Q=2q\Rightarrow Q-2q=0\Rightarrow Q=2q
