Question 73 of 311

Two charges qq and 3q3q are separated by a distance ‘rr’ in air. At a distance xx from charge qq, the resultant electric field is zero. The value of xx is :

Show answer and solution

Answer: (C) r(1+3)\dfrac{r}{(1+\sqrt{3})}

Given:
(E⃗net)P=0{\left({\vec{E}}_{net}\right)}_{P}=0
⇒kqx2=k×3q(r−x)2\Rightarrow \dfrac{kq}{{x}^{2}}=\dfrac{k\times 3q}{{\left(r-x\right)}^{2}}
⇒(r−x)2=3x2\Rightarrow {\left(r-x\right)}^{2}=3{x}^{2}
⇒r−x=3x\Rightarrow r-x=\sqrt{3}x
⇒x=r3+1\Rightarrow x=\dfrac{r}{\sqrt{3}+1}
