Question 134 of 311

Two balls of same mass and carrying equal charge are hung from a fixed support of length ll. At electrostatic equilibrium, assuming that angles made by each thread is small, the separation, xx between the balls is proportional to :

Show answer and solution

Answer: (D) l1/3l^{1 / 3}

In equilibrium,
Fe=Tsin⁡θ\mathrm{F}_{\mathrm{e}}=\mathrm{T} \sin \theta
mg=Tcos⁡θm g=T \cos \theta
tan⁡θ=Femg=q24πϵ0x2×mg\tan \theta=\frac{F_e}{m g}=\frac{q^2}{4 \pi \epsilon_0 x^2 \times m g}
also
tan⁡θ≈sin⁡=x/2ℓ\tan \theta \approx \sin =\frac{x / 2}{\ell}
Hence,
x2ℓ=q24πϵ0x2×mg\frac{x}{2 \ell}=\frac{q^2}{4 \pi \epsilon_0 x^2 \times m g}
⇒x3=2q2ℓ4πϵ0mg\Rightarrow x^3=\frac{2 q^2 \ell}{4 \pi \epsilon_0 m g}
∴x=(q2ℓ2πϵ0mg)1/3\therefore x=\left(\frac{q^2 \ell}{2 \pi \epsilon_0 m g}\right)^{1 / 3}
Therefore
x∝ℓ1/3\mathrm{x} \propto \ell^{1 / 3}
