Question 174 of 311

The electrostatic potential due to an electric dipole at a distance rr varies as :

Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) 1r2\dfrac{1}{{r}^{2}}

The potential at a distance rr due to a short dipole is Vdip(r)=14πϵ∘p⃗⋅r^r2{V}_{dip}\left(r\right)=\dfrac{1}{4\pi {\epsilon }_{^{\circ}}}\dfrac{\vec{p}\cdot \hat{r}}{{r}^{2}}, where p⃗\vec{p}=dipole moment.
Thus,
Vdip(r){V}_{dip}(r) is proportional to 1r2\dfrac{1}{{r}^{2}}.
