Question 211 of 311

There is a uniform electrostatic field in a region. The potential at various points on a small sphere centred at PP, in the region, is found to vary between the limits 589.0V589.0V to 589.8V589.8V. What is the potential at a point on the sphere whose radius vector makes an angle of 60∘60^{\circ} with the direction of the field?

Show answer and solution

Answer: (D) 589.6V589.6V

ΔV=Ed\Delta V=Ed

Alongdiameter∆V=589.8−589.0VAlong diameter∆V=589.8-589.0V
=0.8V=0.8V

0.8=Ed0.8=Ed

Now

ΔV=Ed2cos⁡θ=0.4×cos⁡60o\Delta V=E\dfrac{d}{2}\cos \theta =0.4\times \cos {60}^{o}

=0.2=0.2

∴589.8−V=0.2∴589.8-V=0.2

V=589.6VV=589.6V
