Question 241 of 311

An electric dipole is placed at a distance of 2 cm from an infinite plane sheet having positive charge density σo\sigma_{\mathrm{o}}. Choose the correct option from the following.

Show answer and solution

Answer: (D) Potential energy of dipole is minimum and torque is zero.

Electric field due to sheet E=σ2ε0E=\frac{\sigma}{2 \varepsilon_0}
and torque on dipole
τ⃗=P⃗×E⃗\vec{\tau}=\vec{P} \times \vec{E}
here
τ⃗=0\vec{\tau}=0
and
U=−P⃗⋅E⃗→U=-\vec{P} \cdot \vec{E} \rightarrow should be minimum
