Question 249 of 311

The electric field due to a short electric dipole at a large distance (r)\left(r\right) from center of dipole on the equatorial plane varies with distance as :

Show answer and solution

Answer: (C) 1r3\dfrac{1}{{r}^{3}}

An electric dipole is a system of two charges of equal and opposite magnitude placed at a short distance.
The dipole moment is,
p=2qlp=2ql.
The electric field due to the dipole is,

E=2kpr3E=\dfrac{2kp}{{r}^{3}}
Clearly, the electric field varies as
1r3\dfrac{1}{{r}^{3}}.
