Question 260 of 311

An electric dipole is formed by two equal and opposite charges qq with separation dd . The charges have same mass m. It is kept in a uniform electric field E.E. If it is slightly rotated from its equilibrium orientation, then its angular frequency ω\omega is:

Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) 2qEmd\sqrt{\dfrac{2qE}{md}}

τ=pEsin⁡⁡θ\tau =pE\sin ⁡\theta
For small angle,

τ=pEθ\tau =pE\theta
α=τI=pEIθ\alpha =\dfrac{\tau }{I}=\dfrac{pE}{I}\theta
(∵α=ω2θ)\left(∵\alpha ={\omega }^{2}\theta \right) Angular frequency =pEI=\sqrt{\dfrac{pE}{I}}
=(qd)E(md24+md24)=\sqrt{\dfrac{\left(qd\right)E}{\left(m\dfrac{{d}^{2}}{4}+m\dfrac{{d}^{2}}{4}\right)}}
=2qEmd=\sqrt{\dfrac{2qE}{md}}
