Question 77 of 223

The variation of acceleration due to gravity (g)\left(g\right) with distance (r)\left(r\right) from the center of the earth is correctly represented by
(Given
R=R= radius of earth)

Show answer and solution

Answer: (A)

We know that the gravitational field strength varies according to the variation of the distance of an object from the centre of the earth.
So, gravitational field strength inside the earth varies as,

g=GMrR3g=\dfrac{GMr}{{R}^{3}} if 0≤r≤R0\leq r\leq R.
So,
g∝rg\propto r.
At the surface, it is maximum,
g=GMR2g=\dfrac{GM}{{R}^{2}}.
Outside the earth, it varies as,
g∝1r2g\propto \dfrac{1}{{r}^{2}} for (r≥R)(r\geq R).
So, this is the possible graph,
