Question 56 of 194

Which of the following expressions corresponds to simple harmonic motion along a straight line, where x\mathrm{x} is the displacement and a,b,c\mathrm{a}, \mathrm{b}, \mathrm{c} are positive constants?

Show answer and solution

Answer: (D) −bx-b x

In linear S.H.M., the restoring force acting on particle should always be proportional to the displacement of the particle and directed towards the equilibrium position. i.e., F∝x\mathrm{F} \propto \mathrm{x}
or
F=−bx\mathrm{F}=-\mathrm{bx} where b\mathrm{b} is a positive constant.
