Question 79 of 194

Which graph represents the difference between total energy and potential energy of a particle executing SHMSHM vs its distance from mean position?

Show answer and solution

Answer: (B)

In a SHM, mechanical energy is conserved. So, the sum of kinetic energy and potential energy remains constant.
For a SHM,

T.E.−U=K.ET.E.-U=K.E
⇒T.E.−U=12mv2=12mω2(A2−x2)\Rightarrow T.E.-U=\dfrac{1}{2}m{v}^{2}=\dfrac{1}{2}m{\omega }^{2}\left({A}^{2}-{x}^{2}\right)
This is the equation of a downward parabola.
