Question 98 of 194

For a simple pendulum, a graph is plotted between its kinetic energy (K.E.) and potential energy (P.E.) against its displacement d. which one of the following represents these correctly? (graphs are schematic and not drawn to scale)

Show answer and solution

Answer: (C)

For simple pendulum performing the simple harmonic motion, displacement, y=Asin⁡ωt\text{y}=A\sin \text{ωt}v=dydt=ωAcosωt=ωA2−y2v=\dfrac{dy}{dt}=\text{ωA}cos\text{ωt}=\text{ω}\sqrt{{\text{A}}^{2}-{\text{y}}^{2}}⇒K.E.=12mv2\text{⇒K.E}\text{.}=\dfrac{1}{2}{mv}^{2},
This represents a downward parabola,
Y=±AY=\pm A, K.E.=12ω2m(A2−A2)=0\text{K.E.}=\dfrac{1}{2}{\text{ω}}^{2}\text{m} \left({\text{A}}^{2}-{\text{A}}^{2}\right)=0. P.E.=12mω2y2\text{P.E.}=\dfrac{1}{2}{\text{mω}}^{2}{\text{y}}^{2}. This represents an upward parabola. On plotting graphs of potential energy & kinetic energy.
