Question 110 of 194

A mass mm is suspended from a spring of negligible mass and the system oscillates with a frequency f1.{f}_{1}. The frequency of oscillations if a mass 9m9m is suspended from the same spring is f2.{f}_{2}. The value of f1f2\dfrac{{f}_{1}}{{f}_{2}} is _____ .

Show answer and solution

Answer: 3

Frequency of oscillation of a spring-block system is given by, f=12πkmf=\dfrac{1}{2\pi }\sqrt{\dfrac{k}{m}}
Therefore, for both cases, we can write

f1=12πkm{f}_{1}=\dfrac{1}{2\pi }\sqrt{\dfrac{k}{m}} and
f2=12πk9m{f}_{2}=\dfrac{1}{2\pi }\sqrt{\dfrac{k}{9m}}
Required ratio,
f1f2=91=31\dfrac{{f}_{1}}{{f}_{2}}=\sqrt{\dfrac{9}{1}}=\dfrac{3}{1}
