Question 159 of 194

In figure (A), mass 2m2m is fixed on mass mm which is attached to two springs of spring constant kk. In figure (B), mass mm is attached to two spring of spring constant kk and 2k2k. If mass mm in (A) and (B) are displaced by distance xx horizontally and then released, then time period T1{T}_{1} and T2{T}_{2} corresponding to (A) and (B) respectively follow the relation.

Show answer and solution

Answer: (A) T1T2=32\dfrac{{T}_{1}}{{T}_{2}}=\dfrac{3}{\sqrt{2}}

The time period of spring block system is given by T=2πmkT=2\pi \sqrt{\dfrac{m}{k}}.
In both the cases springs are connected in parallel,

In case
11: keq=2k{k}_{eq}=2k and total mass is 3m3m. Therefore,
T1=2π(3m)keq=2π(3m)2k{T}_{1}=2\pi \sqrt{\dfrac{\left(3m\right)}{{k}_{eq}}}=2\pi \sqrt{\dfrac{\left(3m\right)}{2k}}
In case
2:2:keq=3k{k}_{eq}=3k and total mass is mm. Therefore,
T2=2π(m)3k{T}_{2}=2\pi \sqrt{\dfrac{\left(m\right)}{3k}}
⇒T1T2=92=32\Rightarrow \dfrac{{T}_{1}}{{T}_{2}}=\sqrt{\dfrac{9}{2}}=\dfrac{3}{\sqrt{2}}
